Dear Editor,
This is the closest election in 20 years in Guyana. The margins for losing and gaining power are razor thin based on the projections. Stabroek News’s exceptional editorial titled ‘Imponderables‘ (November 20) brilliantly examines some of these projections and emphasises the many imponderables that may turn or twist the outcome of these elections. I have written previously about the need for parties to have full-force representation at polling stations and to conduct their own counts to cross-reference with the final results. But something else in the SN editorial has jarred my fears. It is the 43,424 voter ID cards that had not been uplifted as of October 15. Who has possession and control of and access to these cards? Are these cards secure and protected to the satisfaction of all parties? Is a single list of names and other particulars for these IDs been created? If so, is that list available to all political parties to enable them to cross-match these names and details with the general list of electors, if necessary?
Yours faithfully,
M Maxwell
