Some 25 international electoral observers, part of the Organisation of American States Electoral Observation Mission (OAS/EOM), are to be deployed across Guyana later this week in preparation for next Monday’s elections.
This news came with the announcement of OAS/EOM Chief of Mission Professor Gordon Shirley’s arrival in Georgetown on Monday.
The OAS was invited by the Government of Guyana to conduct the observation mission and according to a press release from the group the process began yesterday after the electoral observation agreement was signed between the OAS and the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
Shirley and members of his team will be meeting and conducting interviews with the electoral authorities, political, governmental and international community representatives and also media and civic society in Guyana representatives.
Observation teams, meanwhile, will be placed to overlook the entire electoral process across Guyana.
In reminding political parties and media houses of their signed code of conduct, the OAS/EOM urged all participants in the electoral process to adhere to the agreed codes of conduct and conduct themselves in such a manner.
“The OAS/EOM encourages all electoral participants to ensure that the November 28 election is conducted in a framework of peace and normalcy,” the release stated.
