A 35-year-old labourer of Burnham Avenue, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice was stabbed to death around 4:40 pm yesterday while consuming alcohol at a rum shop in the village.
Reports are that Vickram Bickramajeet suffered a wound under his left arm with a broken bottle following an argument. His attacker, a cousin reportedly plunged the bottle into him and turned it before pulling it out, causing him to bleed profusely.
He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and immediately transferred to the Mahaicony Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The suspect who was on the run turned himself in late last evening after the police had taken his mother into custody.
Reports are that the suspect also suffered minor injuries during the incident and his mother had taken him to the hospital for treatment. They had already left the hospital when Vickram arrived.
Amrita Persaud, a relative told Stabroek News that around 5 pm she was on her way home with her husband when she met Vickram’s mother who was heading to the scene.
She said they joined the woman and when they arrived they saw him lying in a pool of blood on someone’s bridge. His wound was wrapped up with a t-shirt and he appeared to be in a semi-conscious state.
Several persons had already gathered at the scene. Relatives assisted in placing the injured man in a vehicle to go to the hospital.
His father, Bickramajeet told this newspaper that he learnt his son was in the company of an older brother and two cousins when tragedy struck.
