Dear Editor,
There can be no doubt that Guyana has come a far way since the assumption to office of the PPP/C on October 5, 1992. This record of progress is evident for all to see – the improved performance of our students at national and regional examinations; the proliferation of new housing schemes; a better supply of potable water; improved health care services; and better roads and bridges, to name but a few. The progress made is all the more significant when seen against the background of a run-down economy which the PPP/C administration inherited when it took over the reins of government in 1992.
This perception of Guyana was changed after the elections of October 5 1992, the first free and fair elections after some twenty-four years of PNC authoritarian rule during which the democratic and social fabric of this nation was ruthlessly ruptured. There was a widespread and a pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair among the Guyanese people, in particular the young people, the majority of whom were unable to find jobs that could allow them to lead secure and dignified lives.
Today, all of that has changed, thanks to the PPP/C government which immediately on assuming office began to address the concerns of the Guyanese people, including the burning issue of providing a roof over the head of the countless number of Guyanese who were forced to live in rented houses or in squatter settlements. Today, a vast majority of those people are now proud owners of their own homes or are living in communities that have now been regularized with water, electricity, roads, schools and health centres, as in the case of Sophia and several other such schemes.
This is one indication of a caring government, one that is committed to provide a roof over the heads of every Guyanese family in need. The statistics show that Guyanese today are not only living longer and healthier lives but they are doing much better at school. The PPP/C government has been putting the emphasis on the heath and education of the Guyanese people, two of the most important ingredients for a good quality of life.
These are some of the reasons why Guyanese will vote solidly for the PPP/C and for Donald Ramotar come November 28, to ensure that this momentum of progress and development continues.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
