The Rotary Club of Demerara says about 200 St Cuthbert’s Mission residents benefited from medical care when it hosted an outreach exercise at the village’s health centre on Sunday.
In a press release, the Club said it responded to a call made by Imelda Williams, a Medex stationed within the community and who is keenly aware of residents’ many health needs.
Residents were treated by a team comprising doctors Gavin Persaud, Nahram Singh, Batukhan Wilson and Shawn Bancroft. Most residents were afflicted with cold, flu, conjunctivitis, upper respiratory infections, hypertension, skin diseases and arthritis pain. One resident was treated for tuberculosis. Doctors also did blood pressure and sugar tests and followed up care was provided by Nurse Faye Jones, Medex Bhojdat and other personnel from the Ministry of Health’s Chronic Diseases Department.
Rotarian Dr Debra Patterson-Skeete and a team comprising Arlene Richards, Sheena Solomon and Verlalinta Morgan also provided dental services. About 100 extractions were done.
The Club said medical outreaches have formed a critical part of its annual community programmes in its quest to provide service above self to those most in need. This exercise is the second of four planned for the Rotary year which started in July. The third outreach exercise is set for February 2012 and Community Service Director Past President Patrick de Groot said the team plans to return to St Cuthbert’s given the number of persons in the community that need health care.
