A 37-year-old labourer who pleaded guilty to stealing surveillance cameras worth $30,000 was yesterday sentenced to six months imprisonment after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Dexter Grant of North Ruimveldt was charged with stealing three cameras belonging to Rawle Ward on November 19.
The defendant’s mother who was present during the court proceedings compensated for the stolen articles.
After the man accepted that he had committed the simple larceny offence he pleaded with the court for leniency.
He said, “I was going to collect my bicycle from the workshop but I did not have enough money at the time and I stole the cameras so that I could pay for my bike.”
According to the facts presented by the prosecution, the VC secured his business premises at Lot 1068 Gordon Place, South Ruimveldt and returned later during the day when he discovered that the articles were missing.
The man immediately viewed the recording on the surveillance camera which was set up in his premises and saw the defendant in the video removing the articles. As a result he was confronted by the VC and he admitted taking the devices.
After considering both the mitigating and aggravating circumstances the magistrate sentenced Grant to six months in jail.
