Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry sentenced a 22-year-old interior worker to three months jail after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his reputed wife of nine years.
The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court heard that on November 9, at Berbice Street, Lamaha Springs, Dwayne Hinds assaulted Karen Hoseain. In his defence, Hinds told the court that on the said day, he told the woman that he wanted to end their relationship and she responded with a series of indecent words, so he hit her. “I hit her, but not hard for it to cause any problem,” he explained.
In her testimony, Hoseain tearfully told the court that it was the seventh time that the man had abused her.
She said that on one occasion he allegedly held a hot iron close to her face and threatened to disfigure her. “One time he took a screwdriver and forced it to my side and tell me that he gonna murder me,” she added.
Prosecutor Luckhai Jairam told the court that on the said day the VC informed the accused that she was going to visit her mother and the man became annoyed and insisted that she leave her belongings behind. He then threw her belongings through the window and dealt her several cuffs and kicks to her abdomen.
