The Private Sector Commission today called on all minibus operators to ensure that they are available on Monday November 28, 2011 to transport electors to and from polling stations.
In a statement, it said this would greatly assist especially those who have to travel long distances to their polling places.
“The PSC would like to urge all minibus operators to consider this service to be their civic duty”, the statement said.
The PSC call came following the government’s declaration yesterday that Monday – elections day – would be a public holiday.
Stabroek News in a front page comment on Thursday and others had pointed out that voters could be disadvantaged as a result of minibuses not working that day.
Observers point out that the call alone by the PSC would not be enough to persuade minibuses to work on Monday. They say the buses would find it financially infeasible to turn out just to take voters to their polling stations.
