As President Bharrat Jagdeo prepares to leave office, he said it has been his greatest privilege to serve Guyana and to witness the hard work and dedication of all Guyanese.
Jagdeo, in a lengthy address to the nation, said that its growth will be as a result of the democratic choices made by the citizens of Guyana.
The president related that during his12 years of serving in the highest office in the land, there were difficult days and moments oftough decisions which can be lonely. During these periods, he said, power was drawn from the people he served who represent “timeless values that are the hallmark of our society.
“From their basic sense of decency, their compassion and desire to look out for those less fortunate than themselves, and their willingness to advance our democracy so that the future can be better than the past.”
Jagdeo stated that attempts made by various sources to generate barriers among Guyanese failed while adding that pride should be taken in Guyana being one of the most diverse nations worldwide.
He considered Guyana to be one of few countries which has successfully adapted to a multi-cultural society which is evident through sport, culture, commerce and national life.
“There are streets in our towns and cities where mosques, temples and churches sit side by side… Our children play cricket and football together, they take part in drama and debates, they meet in coffee shops and they chat online. It is in these settings that the true Guyana is visible for all to see, and it is here that our unity is given voice,” Jagdeo said.
This unity, he said, provides basis for a better future with the continuous dedication of Guyanese who will help in Guyana’s progression.
As he bid farewell as President, he extended gratitude to supporters for their trust and the opportunity that had been bestowed upon him, adding that he leaves with expectations of a better Guyana.
“I leave with a sense of hope for the future of Guyana that makes me believe that our best days have still to come, and with a sense of confidence that the people of this country have what it takes to give full life to the vision of a free, secure, socially just and prosperous Guyana.”
