Deputy Secretary-General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin is here for the general elections and said that his presence signifies that the OAS considers the elections process important.
Ramdin, when contacted by Stabroek News yesterday, said that he is here as a “political person” on behalf of the OAS to look at political issues beyond the elections as opposed to the observer mission which scrutinizes how the elections are conducted.
He said that he has met with President Bharrat Jagdeo and the political parties and they have welcomed his presence.
He will look at the environment in terms of democracy and after elections, governance, Ramdin, a Surinamese, said. “It is a way of indicating from the OAS that we consider the election process important,” the Ambassador said. He leaves here on Tuesday.
