Opposition coalition APNU this evening announced that it would not participate in any recount of the votes, saying it has no confidence that the integrity of ballot boxes has not been compromised since the end of official counting last evening.
At a news conference at 6 pm, APNU campaign manager Joseph Harmon said that the PPP/C’s call for recounts in regions 3, 4 and 10, is an “attempt” by the PPP to stall the announcement of results of the elections and create confusion among the populace.
Harmon said that at 6pm, APNU had not been officially informed by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) of the request for the recount.
“APNU will, therefore, not participate in any recount of votes since all statements of poll have, as required by the electoral laws, been signed by the presiding officers and the polling agents and posted outside of each of the polling stations,” he said.
APNU presidential candidate David Granger said there were no grounds for a recount.
The other major contestant the Alliance For Change also said this afternoon it was opposed to the recounts.
