Outgoing president Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday commended members of the police force for taking swift action in Region 7 on Sunday, after a man and two of his accomplices attempted to ambush police officers who were escorting ballot boxes.
“I gather this guy was a notorious criminal,” Jagdeo said. He continued that he’d received a report that the man was wanted for several robberies in that area, “he terrorized a lot of people and they recovered some weapons too.”
Meanwhile, the dead man’s body was taken to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour by police late yesterday afternoon. Up to press time last night, the body was yet to be identified.
Police had on Sunday reported that the deceased, along with two other men attacked the law enforcers as they were transporting ballot boxes to two interior areas.
The police said that initial information obtained from two police ranks at the scene was that they were on duty escorting two ballot boxes to Maripa Dukwari and Kurutuku. While at the Maripa Dukwari Landing, the ranks were attacked by three men who were armed and who attempted to take away the police firearms during which one of them was fatally shot.
