The PPP/C has promised to take further steps to stamp out domestic violence and create a society which not only respects women and is violence free, but where gender equality reigns supreme.
These promises, among others, were made by PPP/C presidential candidate, Donald Ramotar as he presented his vision for the development of women at an event organized by the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WP0), the ruling party’s women’s arm, as part of observances for International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Friday.
“We will focus specifically on women’s issues throughout our society; enhancing women’s social and economic conditions; empowering our women by removing oppression and creating conditions where they are able to express and enhance themselves in every aspect of their lives,” Ramotar said.
He said too that as outlined in the PPP/C’s manifesto, his party embraced and supported women switching from traditional career roles such as nurses and cooks to those that were predominantly male, for example mechanics and welders among others. He added that it is with pride he stands when he meets women representing all sectors of the workforce and who were proud of doing so although his party would have been working for those equalities from its inception.
Obtaining and functioning at the jobs he stated was one hurdle that Guyana had overcome however being treated equally both in terms of payment for services or on the job respect was another that needed addressing and will be under his administration.
The event saw also PYO representatives from across Guyana giving encouragement and well wishes to Ramotar for general and regional elections on Monday.
Presidential Adviser Gail Teixeira also used the forum to introduce to the female candidates on the party’s list.
