Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday granted a technician $250,000 bail when he appeared before her in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to a charge of simple larceny.
The court heard that on March 31 Jason Thomas, of Lot 93 Smithfield, New Amsterdam, allegedly stole a quantity of cell phones and accessories from Pooramdat Boodhoo in Georgetown. Thomas was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that the accused was employed by the VC who observed that a quantity of products was missing. After the observation, the VC did not question Thomas; instead she launched an internal investigation and later found that more than $1M in cell phones and accessories were missing. The matter was reported and after being pressured, the accused allegedly admitted guilt.
After narrating the facts, Harvey said he had no objection to bail; however, he asked that a few conditions be imposed. The magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favour regarding the bail application and stressed to the accused that he must report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.
