Partial results released by GECOM early this morning show that the PPP/C is ahead in six regions, APNU in three and the AFC in one.
The ruling party is comfortably ahead in regions 1 (Barima/Waini), 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), 3 (West Demerara and Essequibo River islands), 5 (West Berbice), 6 (NA to Corentyne) and 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo). These areas are traditional PPP/C strongholds.
The opposition coalition APNU is ahead in Region Four (Georgetown and outlying areas), Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Upper Essequibo). These are traditional strongholds of APNU’s main constituent, the PNCR.
The AFC is ahead in Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni). In 2006, the PPP/C won Region 8 but this time around it seems that votes won by GAP/ROAR in 2006 have migrated to the AFC.
