The heads of the diplomatic missions of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom say they hope that all Guyanese respect the democratic outcome as expressed in Monday’s elections and they said the outcome has offered an historic opportunity for Guyanese.
US Ambassador Brent Hardt, Canadian High Commissioner David Devine and UK High Commissioner Andrew Ayre, in a joint statement today congratulated the people of Guyana for their “dedication to the pursuit of free and fair elections”. They said it was vital that at this important moment all Guyanese work toward the “principle of stable, effective and transparent democratic governance”.
They added that adherence to democratic principles entail respect for the rule of law and maintenance of peace and order.
“It is our fervent hope that all Guyanese respect the democratic outcome, as expressed by the people of Guyana through their votes in the recent elections.
“This outcome offers an historic opportunity for the people of Guyana to come together and work across party lines to advance the interests of all people in Guyana”, they said.
The trio said their countries look forward to working closely with the new government and with “all parties in parliament to support unified national efforts to build a prosperous, secure, and democratic Guyana”.
