Dear Editor,
Another Annual Kashif and Shanghai football extravaganza will dawn upon us at a time when our Golden Jaguars are creating history en route to Brazil for the World Cup. These are encouraging signs which unfortunately will not be enjoyed by Essequibians who will once again be denied the pleasure of witnessing some of our football heroes live in action in Essequibo.
It is indeed disappointing that the organizers after eighteen years have not spread the gospel and thrill of the game to rural areas such as the Essequibo Coast.
Perhaps it’s for economic reasons, but I am encouraged by the numerous sponsors who support this mega event every year, and that they cater for the plight of football-starved residents who live beyond the established boundaries of the city or Linden.
I therefore wish to reinforce our concerns to the organizers and even the sponsors, and to request that this marvellous game be spread throughout the country, more especially as Guyana prepares for the dawn of a new president and government and for the sport to become the embodiment of peace, love and harmony among all our people.
It is not too late for Essequibo to be given the opportunity of witnessing at least one match which can be conveniently hosted at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground.
While I am aware of the dormancy of the Essequibo Football Association, there are still very reliable and competent officials who are eager to facilitate such an event in partnership with local entrepreneurs.
There can be no better place to witness a football match than in Essequibo where the fans are knowledgeable, passionate, comforting and multi-racial.
Such a spectacle once it becomes a reality will transform the lives of devoted fans and importantly those of our young, emerging footballers who need the inspiration of professional events such as the Kashif and Shanghai tournament which will put a spring in their step so they try to emulate their heroes.
Yours faithfully,
Elroy Stephney
