The Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT) commends the nation for the peace and harmony demonstrated before, during and after the conduct of the elections, and urges that such standards are maintained in the aftermath.
In a press release, the GIT noted that even as Guyana held its poll, similar polls were being held in Egypt and The Congo which were beset by violence and mayhem. It encouraged Guyanese to continue to maintain peace and harmony.
The GIT also noted the “few unfortunate incidents of intolerance and disorderly behaviour” and condemned them, “especially the one that involved a senior party official who man-handled a female polling agent on elections day.”
The group noted that prior to elections it had called on politicians, party activists and supporters of the various parties to exercise their duties with dignity, honour and honesty and it hoped and expects all involved to continue to act with restraint and integrity.
