Why are we always finding some people sawing at sawdust? The year 2006 will always stand out as the only election in Guyana’s history where the Opposition Leader conceded poll defeat with magnaminity. It was his principled stand that gave the people who mattered a feeling of silent endearment towards him.
There are those who believe that in order to appear as a strong leader, the opposition leader has to make threats, has to demand certain things (one time we had a forensic audit, this time around we have another senseless request), display reluctance to accede to requests, etc. Some of the followers are led astray by not thinking for themselves. Is this opposition party telling its followers that it won the election?
This type of behaviour only indicates that they have no sense of what happened on the ground in terms of the mood of the people and the level of support. They have no contingency plan (or this is the plan they are now unfolding?) for representing their constituents. Is it only as a ruling party that we can get things done?
This hung parliament must govern for the benefit of the country as a whole, hence, all its people. The people did their part in casting their vote; they should now go back to normalcy and leave the wrangling to our politicians. A good leader must not use his people as a weapon against others. A good leader must accept the facts and do not nitpick, which is the art of losers.
Yours faithfully,
