A 15-year old, who went into labour on the high-seas just off Morawhanna District, Region One, was rescued on Friday in an emergency joint operation spearheaded by the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.
Authorities said the other key players were the Ministries of Health and Public Works.
A senior Ministry of Health official told Stabroek News that the teenager and her baby were up to yesterday resting at the Morawhanna Health Centre.
Ministry of Health officials said they received a call from the crew of the MV Kimbia, which comes under the purview of the Ministry of Public Works that the teen had gone into labour while on the vessel MV Kimbia on the high seas.
Health care workers were shuttled to the location by the Coast Guard. The expectant mother was in distress and herself and baby could have died. This led to an on board emergency delivery. The medical staff who were equipped with saline and oxygen and other emergency apparatus operated quickly and were applauded.
The mother and the baby were then taken ashore by the Coast Guard vessel. The duo were then taken to the Morawhanna Health Centre where they are currently resting.
