Linden could become a hub for international trade

Dear Editor,
Linden’s ideal geographic location, 65 miles away from Georgetown, up the Demerara River, has afforded the town long before its Mackenzie days a lasting taste of international trade, first through forestry, then more significantly, bauxite mining.

The Demerara River (Guyana’s most economically viable river) which bisects this beautiful landscape, along with an already effective road transport network (Linden-Lethem and Linden-Georgetown corridors), not forgetting what is still considered this country’s best airstrip (at the back of Kara Kara mines), can transform Linden if exploited to their fullest potential, into a hub for international trade between the Caribbean region to the north and Brazil to the south.

The town also possesses other supporting services and conditions that would allow for such a direction to be pursued, with a large segment of the population already having an established background in working for and with multinational institutions which produced a skilled labour force. Large amounts of land are available to facilitate and accommodate expansion, that would be ideal for the establishment of storage facilities and industrial sites.

Several credible documents have so far concluded that Linden is equipped with all the right instruments which would allow the town to achieve the objectives; one such document is the Region #10 development strategy. Also the new means of electrification and a broadband connection on the horizon will strengthen the claim for Lindian to become an international hub.

On behalf of the people of Region 10 I will strive to ensure that this idea becomes a reality, so that the hopelessness with which many view the future direction and development of the town and the region as a whole can begin to change. Then Lindeners will start to position themselves to better understand what part they can play in helping to make and benefit from Linden becoming a hub for international trade.

Yours faithfully,
Sharma Solomon
