Transparency International Institute Guyana is joining the international community to mark the 2011 International Anti-Corruption Day initiated by the United Nations (UN) in its campaign to combat corruption globally.
In a press release, the Institute said the principal activity will be a seminar on Friday, December 9 featuring presentations by Zoe Reiter of Transparency International (Berlin) and Dr Arif Bulkan, director of Transparency Institute. An invitation has also been extended to the local office of the United Nations Development Programme to make a presentation on behalf of the UN.
The agenda will also include the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2011. The meeting will be held in the boardroom of the Demerara Life building from 10am to 1pm.
According to the release, the UN, conscious that corruption hinders efforts to achieve democracy and the rule of law, leads to human rights violations, distorts markets, erodes quality of life and allows organised crime, terrorism and other threats to human security to flourish adopted a Convention against Corruption in December 2005.
