ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Antigua’s Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium will now help to host the preliminary round of next month’s Caribbean Twenty20, after organisers took the decision to move the tournament from Trinidad and Tobago.
The Queen’s Park Oval was scheduled to host the first six days of the January 9-20 tournament but the West Indies Cricket Board said Monday high rental fees and the unavailability of the facility on one of the days, forced them to turn to Antigua. As a result, Leeward Islands and Guyana will now play the feature match of the doubleheader on the opening night of the championship, while Windward Islands and defending champions Trinidad and Tobago meet in the preceding game.
The second leg of the championship will bowl off in Barbados on January 17 where all games will be played at the historic Kensington Oval. Group A will comprise T&T along with Windward Islands, Guyana, Leeward Islands and Canada while Group B will see Jamaica, Barbados, Combined Campuses and Colleges, Netherlands and Sussex doing battle.
The highest placed Caribbean team will qualify for the Champions League Twenty20.
