The University of Guyana (UG) Library on Monday received a donation of books valued $1,023,000 from overseas-based Guyanese Dr Shamir Andrew Ally President/CEO of International Consulting and Financial Services. UG Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr Marlene Cox and UG Librarian Gwyneth George received the books at a meeting at the Pegasus Hotel luncheon area. Both UG representatives said they are grateful for the donation to the university.
Dr Ally said he is pleased to make the donation to UG, saying “Students must be educated for democracy to flourish.” He sees his contribution as a stepping stone for that to happen. Dr Ally also said that his family plans to offer three scholarships in the field of Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship next year. He then appealed to Guyanese in the global Diaspora to donate to the library as it is in dire need. He also extended gratitude to Laparkan for offering him reduced shipment rates to facilitate his effort.
