Another man appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with the armed robbery of Laing Avenue, Georgetown, housewife Fayeanna Lewis.
Bernard James, 21, of Lot 158 Albouystown, is accused of robbing Lewis at gunpoint of gold jewellery and cell phones, among other items and cash, totalling $583,000 in value. The man was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Attorney-at-law George Thomas made an application for reasonable bail citing that his client had no previous conviction. He also related that the accused was never put on an identification parade. The prosecution, however, objected to bail on the grounds that the accused may not return to court if bail was granted. The court decided to remand the accused to prison until the matter is called on January 6 next year.
In narrating the police case, the prosecutor said that on Tuesday Lewis was at home when she was confronted by the accused and his accomplice, who held her at gunpoint and robbed her of the articles before they made good their escape.
Allan Philadelphia, 33, of Lot 110-111 Victoria, East Coast Demerara, was also charged with this offence last Friday when he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at Court Two. Philadelphia, who allegedly bit the rings from the woman’s fingers, was also remanded to jail until January 6.
