Tourism Ministry functioning normally

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce is said to currently be functioning as it should even with the absence of a minister since its budget ends at the conclusion of this year.

Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Harold Singh, yesterday told Stabroek News that tourism was “normal” because of the presence of directors of tourism and industry.

He explained that because of the budget which has been fixed to conclude at the end of this year, all programmes will be executed as planned.

“There has been no major impact. All activities will continue as normal,” Singh noted.

When contacted yesterday, Presidential Advisor on Governance, Gail Teixeira, said that a ministerial candidate has not yet been named and would have to be appointed by the President.

Further discussions about this issue, she said, would have to be conducted with Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon.

When the cabinet of President Donald Ramotar was sworn in on December 5, no announcement of an appointment at the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce was made.

Previously serving in this position was Manniram Prashad who has not returned to Cabinet.
