KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – One of the island’s leading volleyball players died unexpectedly on Tuesday.
Media reports indicated that Danny Wilson, an Olympic beach volleyball hopeful along with childhood friend Mark Lewis, died at the Savanna-La-Mar Hospital in Westmoreland as a result of injuries suffered to the head.
Details are sketchy, but the Jamaica Observer reported that Wilson returned to Jamaica on Saturday from Israel, where he had been playing professionally over the last two years.
The newspaper added that he was admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay on Sunday morning after he started vomiting blood, and following CT scans, it was discovered that he had two concussions.
Jamaica Volleyball Association President Major Warrenton Dixon said words have escaped “It’s rough,” he told the newspaper. “In some respects, it is a setback because Mark and Dany as far as we know are our most prolific beach volleyball pair, (but) at this point we are more concerned about the human aspect.”
Wilson won the silver medal at the NORCECA men’s beach volleyball competition two years ago in Kingston with Lewis, and they also finished third at last year’s FIVB men’s World Championship qualification also on home soil.
