Bettencourt’s Diner yesterday opened the doors to its newest business venture the ‘Bettencourt’s TGI Grill and Lounge’ located at 62 Brickdam, Georgetown.
The cocktail-style opening of the Bettencourt’s TGI Grill was one-and-a- half hours behind schedule and MC, Pastor Timothy King apologized for the inconvenience. He applauded the initiative by the two youngsters John Raymond and Dillon Radford.
Raymond said that the initiative is a Bettencourt 3rd generation step and is the continuation of the tradition started some 45 years ago in the kitchen of single mom Claire Bettencourt in Bartica, who wanted to provide a better life for her fourteen children. He then related that the business migrated to Georgetown where it was started at the Berbice bus park on tables with pots and pans and has grown ever since.
He said that the Bettencourt family has two other locations at Stabroek and Duncan Street.
Raymond noted that they are not just satisfied with preparing the meals and serving people. They want to invest in food tourism and as a result they will be embarking on four major projects simultaneously: a Magazine highlighting ‘any and everything’ about food which will be called Guyana Spice, the second project will be a food column and blog on the Bettencourt website where the column will be updated on a weekly basis and the blog daily. He stressed that the culinary art is not appreciated and hence the third project will be a cook show called Bettencourt Kitchen which will seek to bring the family together and instill the moral and core values to youngsters and last but not least he said that they plan to introduce a wide range of spices, rubs and pre-seasoned meat. He told the gathering that that will be a challenge but with the support of Guyanese and the Government it will be possible.
The new location will offer a wide variety of fresh Creole dishes and virgin cocktails.
Raymond urged everyone to come out and absorb the new outdoor atmosphere while they enjoy special theme nights.
