The 2011 Guinness-in-the-Streets final which kicked off on November 5 at the Albouystown basketball court with 32 teams divided into eight groups of four will conclude this evening with Back Circle and West Front Road facing off in the finals at the National Park Tarmac
The two finalists for the 2011 Guinness Greatest-in-Da-Street Football came from Group G, which also included East LaPenitence and Plaisance.
West Front Road finished as group winner with 9 (nine) points, while Back Circle in second place, advanced with 6 (six). In the knockout (KO) stages of the competition, West Front Road’s route to the finals came via defeating Globe Yard in the Group of 16, Hope Street Tiger Bay in the quarter-finals and Alexander Village in the semi-finals.
North Last Entrance fell prey to Back Circle in the KO group of 16 and next was defending champions Broad Street B in the quarter-finals and lastly in the semi-finals, the very Spirited Island All Stars were unable to stop Back Circle’s charge to today’s finals.
The competition’s leading goal scorers are Hubert Pedro on 7 goals from West Front Road and Andy Duke of Back Circle is on 5 goals.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport, tournament coordinator Troy Mendonca gave his views on how the competition has gone so far.
“In my view the best two teams have qualified for the final and the passion and commitment they have displayed over the past month has been very impressive. Both teams in many ways deserve to come out victorious, but as we all know their can only be one winner, so may the best team win and I encourage fans to come out to a good night of street football,” said Mendonca.
The winning team will walk away with $500,000 while the runners-up will receive $300,000. The third place showdown is between defeated semi-finalist Alexander Village and Island Allstar and the victors will be collecting $150,000 while the losing fourth place side will receive $75,000.
