The first round of the annual National Schools chess champions sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport commences today at the Providence National Stadium.
The tournament which continues tomorrow will see play in both the team and individual events.
Registration begins at 9:00hrs.
The tournament is being co-ordinated by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and the event is open to chess players from both public and private primary and secondary schools.
Each school can field an ‘A’ or ‘B’ team consisting of four players each.
However, players can also represent their school in the individual category if they are unable to participate in the team event.
There is no entrance fee but players must be attired in their school uniforms on both days.
Players with regulation tournament chess sets can bring those along as a limited number of sets will be available at the venue.
