A 57-year-old man is now dead after being involved in an accident at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, and his family are suspicious concerning the circumstances.
Dead is Puran Ram of Block 8 Tuschen New Scheme,and formerly of Lot 13 Zeeburg, WCD.
According to a police press release, Ram was riding his motor cycle along the Public Road at Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, when he is reported to have swerved from a cow and crashed.
According to the man’s son, Ganesh Ram, he received a call around 10:30 Wednesday night, informing him that his father had been involved in an accident. The younger Ram continued that he was directed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital; where the injured Ram had been taken; and upon his arrival there he was informed that his father had already been pronounced dead.
Ganesh continued that he was informed by a friend of his father’s, who was present at the hospital, that Ram had swerved from a cow and hit a dog, which caused him to lose control of the CG bike he’d been riding.
Upon hearing this, the grieving son said he suggested to the friend that they return to the accident scene to see the animal/animals, but the friend refused. Not daunted by this, Ram’s son said he and some other relatives went to the scene, and from all appearances the friend’s account was inaccurate. He explained that there was no dog or cow in sight, even in the trench nearby.
The man continued that when he looked at the road, he saw tyre marks from a four-wheel vehicle leading to the spot where his father’s body had been following the accident.
He said there was also evidence of blood along the trail that suggested to him that his father was dragged to that spot.
The other thing that has Ganesh and Ram’s other relatives puzzled, is the extent of the injuries suffered by the dead man. Ganesh said his father’s head “buss open, he hand slice up… and he pants leg rip up”. Ram’s son is therefore pondering on how an accident involving a dog could cause such injuries. “If he knock a dog, there was no wall that his head could have hit up for it to buss up so,” he stated, while adding that Ram’s body had been discovered lying close to the curb of the road. Ganesh also explained that his father was never one to speed, nor did he drink alcohol, and he always ensured he put on his red helmet before riding off.
The helmet, he said, is missing and he had received no word from the police about it; “they trying to mek me think he din’t have on helmet that night”. The police, he said, also refused his request for them to revisit the scene of the accident to ascertain whether or not Ram was indeed killed due to animals on the road.
Ram’s family is awaiting a post-mortem examination which is scheduled for today. He leaves to mourn his wife; who resides overseas, his two sons and his grandchildren.
