National cycling captain, Robin Persaud, is currently in off-season training in order to continue his high level of riding in the year ahead.
Persaud, 36, who is currently engaged in gym training four times a week along with jogging and riding, is one of the few cyclists who are still on their saddles at this time of the year.
The cycling captain, who is also a businessman, said that he awakes at 4:30 am on training days and begins a workout regimen that includes lifting weights to strengthen his shoulders, legs, his back and his abdominals.
Persaud said that he will commence his annual six-week basic training on Christmas Day with national rider Alonzo Greaves and brothers Alex and Reginald Menezes.
His basic training will include riding at least 50 miles per day, five days a week.
Persaud said that he will aim to complete 1500 miles of riding along with intervals, power training and sprint training before he begins his competitive season which is scheduled to begin on January 28 when national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed pedals off his first ‘Teach Them Young’ Programme.
The veteran rider who won the final stage and was the top local finisher at Guyana’s premier cycling event, the ‘Ride for Life’ Five Stage road race as well as the winner of several other cycling events enjoyed a successful 2011.
His work ethic and discipline, particularly at this time of year, has enabled him to be a successful rider for a number of years.
