Man denies injuring co-worker in bar fight

A man who ended up in a bar fight with a co-worker was on Thursday placed on $50,000 bail when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The court was told that on December 16, at Georgetown, the accused Jermaine Locke, 29, of Lot 309 Pattensen, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, inflicted harm on the virtual complainant Christopher Singh.

The man pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey said that on the day in question, the two parties along with other co-workers were at a Brazilian bar at Alexander Street when the accused allegedly insulted Singh.

Harvey said further that they were all making jokes when a heated argument ensued between the two parties because the accused had insulted Singh. The prosecutor said that the defendant punched Singh to his abdomen and threw him to the ground, resulting in injuries to his right eye and a fracture to his finger. The matter was reported and Locke was arrested and charged, Harvey concluded.

Locke will make another court appearance on January 9 when the matter is to be called again.
