A 43-year-old miner was on Friday shot and killed during an argument at Enachu, Cuyuni, North West District.
Dead is Oscar De Roche, of Lot 2 Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara. According to a police press release, De Roche was killed during an argument with another man.
The dead man’s relatives told Stabroek News that they received news of De Roche’s death between 7 and 7:30 yesterday morning. His grieving reputed wife Ivy Orna yesterday related that the father of five had only recently returned to the interior after returning briefly during elections. With tears in her eyes, the Suriname national disclosed that De Roche had promised to return home in April in time for her birthday, when he would’ve treated her to a traditional Dutch party. In obvious distress, the woman also told this newspaper that two years back, while her husband was in the interior, she received a call informing her that De Roche had fallen from the Kaieteur Falls, struck his head and died, but a few days afterwards he came home, “so it’s hard to believe”.
De Roche has five children; three boys and two girls; the eldest being 23 and the youngest 16.
The time of the incident is uncertain and according to the police release, a team of investigators has been dispatched to the area.
