Twenty-two-year-old Naresh Khemraj Seenauth was killed on the spot at around 1:25 am Christmas Day after motor car PKK 9011 driven by a drunken driver hit him from behind while he was attempting to cross the road at Triumph, East Coast Demerara.
According to the dead man’s sister, Shanta Seenauth they received the message around 1:45 am when one of his co workers came to take them to the scene.
She related that when they arrived Seenauth’s body had already been covered and when the cover was removed the left side of his face was completely disfigured and many of his bones were broken.
The grieving woman related “He was crossing the road and the car was coming full speed and the man pick he up and pitch he about 100 rods away and bruk up he neck and bruise out he face”.
Seenauth of Pigeon Island, worked as a porter for Emraan Khan of Emraan Khan and Daughters General Store at Mon Repos, ECD and according to a source the driver’s father came forward and offered $500,000 as compensation for the accident.
“He was a hard worker and I never had any problems with him and he was like family and I want justice for him and I refused the money”, Khan told Stabroek News.
He said that he was told that the driver was drinking at Mahaica and was heading home to Better Hope on the morning of the incident. Khan said the last time he saw his employee alive was around 12:30am when he closed his store and went home.
He told Stabroek News that for the past two years Seenauth had been living with him and he received a call around 1:30 am telling him that his employee was in an accident and had died. He said he quickly rushed to the scene where he saw the dead body.
Khan related that he is currently taking care of the funeral expenses and Seenauth will be buried today.
Meanwhile Stabroek News was told that the driver up to press time was still in police custody at the Beterverwagting Police Station assisting with investigations.
A police release had said that investigations revealed that the driver was allegedly proceeding at a fast rate when Khemraj attempted to cross the road and was struck down.
Police said that the driver of the motor vehicle was found to be over the legal limit in terms of alcohol consumption when tested with the breathalyzer.
