Norton St chain snatcher nabbed by citizens – court hears

Odinga Edwards, a labourer who allegedly grabbed a gold chain from a woman, was on Friday remanded to prison.

Edwards appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ on a charge of robbery with aggravation.

The court was told that on December 22, Edwards, of Lot 2 South Cummingsburg, robbed Lotoya Heart of a chain  valued $4,000. The man pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine–Beharry.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey said that Heart was walking along Norton Street when Edwards, who was riding a bike, approached her and grabbed the article. Harvey said that the woman resisted but Edwards held onto her while attempting to relieve her of the chain.

Public-spirited citizens, who were in the area, went to the woman’s assistance and Edwards was apprehended and handed over to the police, the prosecutor concluded.

Harvey objected to bail, citing the prevalence and the seriousness of the offence and his contention that the accused is a known character to the police.

When Edwards was asked about if he had any previous conviction, he said, “I had a matter of break and enter but it got dismissed your worship.”

He was subsequently remanded and is to return to court on January 6, when the matter will be called again.
