Burglars net $1.5M from Charlotte St. stores

Burglars broke and entered two Charlotte Street businesses yesterday morning and stole articles and cash estimated to be over $1.5M in total.

The perpetrators apparently gained entry through the back of the building housing the 499 Store and the Flirt Boutique by cutting open the grill door. The building has no security guard but is equipped with security cameras; however, they were not on at the time of the break-in.

The Flirt Boutique that is housed in the 499 Store.

According to a staff member that made the discovery, around 10am when staffers entered the store, the cash register was opened and all the cash was gone and the back door of the Flirt Boutique was found opened with the grill door cut open.

When Stabroek News
visited the scene, the police had already taken fingerprints and conducted their investigations.

The staff member of the store related that the thieves took away a bag of left side shoes, a quantity of ladies and gents clothing, colognes and sun glasses, among other items. She added that the perpetrators also took away the generator. “I think that it was premeditated because they knew what tools to bring along and it was someone from the area since nobody heard any strange noises,” the staff member said.

The neighbours said that they heard no strange noises, however, one man said that his gate was broken down, which suggested that the perpetrators might have used his yard to gain entrance.

When asked about what measures will be put in place to beef up security, the staffer said that they a security guard would be posted at the location and the cameras will be working.
