ALBA Games bronze medalist and gold medalist at the Ronald Wilson Memorial boxing tournament, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan will look to end this year on a high note when he takes the ring tomorrow night to headline the amateur segment of a Pro Am boxing card in the Twin-Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Khan, 19, along with tournament director for Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Terrence Poole flew to Trinidad yesterday to compete on the card as part of his ongoing exposure and journey on the road to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
GABA president Steve Ninvalle, yesterday said that the bantamweight pugilist was selected to represent Guyana on the card because he was arguably the best amateur boxer in Guyana and because the exposure will serve him well leading up to London.
“Imran is probably the best amateur boxer that we have in Guyana right now, he has great potential, he is also a disciplined individual. The exposure that he is receiving now will be good because he is one of the boxers on the road to London, I wish him well over there and I know he will do us proud once again,” he said.
The GABA president also revealed that the card will also attract boxers from Venezuela, Colombia, Bermuda, USA and the host Trinidad and Tobago.
Khan, who was earlier this month selected to train at an Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) training camp in Cardiff, Wales from February 18 to March 10 next year will be looking to work his fistic magic when he faces Lauren Singh, an undefeated USA based Trinidadian boxer.
Should the up and coming boxing star win his bout tomorrow night, his success could possibly place him in the running for the junior Sportsman of the Year award.
