A man was last evening struck down by a police vehicle as he was crossing Saffon Street, in Charlestown.
At around 7:30pm, the police vehicle, bearing licence plate PJJ 3625, was proceeding north along Saffon Street, when the driver [surname and rank given] spotted Floyd Samboch, 39, of Le Retraite, West Bank Demerara, in the centre of the road.
Upon spotting the pedestrian, the rank is said to have honked his horn three times, but Samboch reportedly did not pay heed to the sound and continued along his way. The driver the swerved the vehicle in order to avoid hitting the pedestrian but was unsuccessful. As a result, Samboch was struck by the right side view mirror of the vehicle.
A friend of the injured man related that Samboch had just left his home when the incident occurred.
Samboch, who was initially said to have received head injuries, was taken in an unconscious state to the Georgetown Public Hospital by the same police vehicle.
When this newspaper visited the hospital last night, Samboch was in the Accident and Emergency Unit moving in and out of consciousness, and hospital officials on duty were preparing to take him over to a private hospital to have a CT Scan performed on him. The results from this scan later revealed that Samboch suffered no broken bones or head injury.
By late last night he had regained consciousness and was at the hospital nursing minor injuries.
