Andrew Morris was yesterday sentenced to one month in jail by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton, who told him he needed “a wake-up call” after he pleaded guilty to abusing his wife with a piece of wood.
The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court heard that on December 27, at East Ruimveldt, Morris assaulted his wife, Abigail Morris, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
In presenting the facts of the case to the court, Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said that on the day in question, there was a fracas between the husband and wife as a result of a misunderstanding. He further explained that the defendant dealt the woman several lashes to her right arm with a piece of wood. The matter was reported, he noted and the man was arrested and charged.
The woman, when given a chance to speak, told the court that it was not the first time that she was abused by her husband.
Magistrate Octave-Hamilton, after imposing the sentence, stressed to the accused that he needed a “wake up call” and ordered that the couple seeks counselling the man serves his jail sentence.
