(de Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – Export of drinking water will be a government priority this year, President Desi Bouterse said in his New Year’s address yesterday. More attention will also be paid to production and exports in the mining sector. “Water is a valuable possession of our country and is abundant, yet there is a great shortage of clean water all over the world. That is why we will consider its export one of our priorities, and take action this year to make preparations for its export”, Bouterse said. Projects in production and mining will create both economic growth and jobs, he said further. “In this way, thousands of citizens can earn an income and have a good and humane life with their families”. Meanwhile, an agreement in principle has been reached with Iamgold for a significant expansion of the gold mine and plant at Rosebel. This expansion requires an investment of US$ 500 million and will considerably expand the existing number of jobs.
