The $427.5M Leonora Technical and Vocational Institute, commissioned by former Minister of Education Shaik Baksh last November, delayed its planned opening yesterday as it is still awaiting a power supply.
When Stabroek News visited the institution yesterday, the gates were padlocked and there was no activity in the weed-infested compound.
Sources linked to the institution told this newspaper that it is yet to be equipped with a telephone line and electricity. The institution has been outfitted with a state-of-the-art computer laboratory and several other state-of-the-art facilities to train the students in various technical vocations.
In an interview with Stabroek News earlier, Principal Cecelia Chung Hinds had said that they have received over 120 applications and they are being currently processed.
Efforts to contact the Principal and the Minister of Education Priya Manickchand for a comment yesterday proved futile.
