A labourer, who was allegedly found with marijuana at the Takutu Bridge on Christmas Day, was yesterday remanded after being charged with narcotics trafficking.
The charge stated that on December 25, 2011 at Takutu Bridge, in Lethem, Andre Jordan, of Croal Street, had in his possession 150 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The man pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
No facts were presented in court about the case, but Jordan, however, told the magistrate that he was beaten and as a result suffered a broken limb.
He also said that the drugs were not found on his person but in a clump of bushes.
The prosecutor then told the court that the labourer was beaten by civilians.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that there was no special reason given for bail to be granted and that the illegal substance was found on Jordan’s person.
As a result, Jordan was subsequently remanded to prison until March 6 at the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
