Observers say there is significance in this courtesy call as it represents an attempt by the government to improve relations with Persaud. Former President Bharrat Jagdeo had scathingly attacked Persaud at a ceremony for the launching of the Guyana Times several years ago. Observers say this courtesy call like the appointing of Navin Chandarpal as a presidential advisor after he had been removed from the post by the former President, represents an attempt by President Ramotar to distance his government from the previous one.
