The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) extends felicitations to President Donald Ramotar on his assumption of office and asks that he meets labour representatives soon. In a press release, FITUG said it deliberately waited six weeks after Ramotar’s assumption of office and swearing in of Cabinet, to allow the “reactionary dust” to settle.
The group says it has confidence in the new president’s abilities particularly since he is “a product of Cheddi Jagan’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and a former executive of our leading affiliate, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU).”
At the same time, it respectfully suggests that Ramotar convenes an early meeting with “the legitimate, verifiable, audited representatives of labour – the FITUG, the TUC – jointly or separately.” FITUG also posited that the president should invite the labour movement to participate in an exploratory session aimed at addressing both labour’s immediate concerns and promoting trade union unity which workers deserve.
