Gavin Barckoy was yesterday charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of 23-year-old mechanic Romalo Roach in a motorcycle collision last October 14.
The defendant of 342 Cummings Street, Alberttown, was placed on $300,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry.
According to the particulars of the charge, on October 9, 2011 at North and Cummings Street, the accused drove motor car PKK 216 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Roach.
The man pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.
In presenting the police facts to the court, the prosecution said that on the day in question, at about 14:25 hrs the accused was driving his car south along the eastern side of Cummings Street. As he approached North Road, the prosecution said, the man failed to stop and collided with the motorcycle Roach was riding along the southern side of North Road. As a result of the collision, Roach fell and sustained severe head injuries. The court was told that the man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he succumbed to his injuries a few days after.
The matter will be called again on January 18.
