Education Minister, Priya Manickchand says that the Ministry is insisting that all private schools follow the set curriculum so as to ensure that students receive the knowledge and skills they need.
She told the Government Information Agency that while she has not yet met the private school proprietors it is expected that any private school being established would be of a standard that delivers education to the students in an internationally accepted manner.
GINA noted that in an effort to ensure that all private schools are on par with the vision of the Education Ministry, the Ministry under the previous Minister Shaik Baksh had moved to have all private education providers registered.
A workshop was facilitated by the Ministry where private education providers were engaged, and which focused on improving data flows from private schools to the Ministry of Education to allow the Ministry to keep track of the schools’ performance.
At that session, GINA said, it was realized that of the over 86 private schools from nursery to secondary in operation, only 27 were approved by the Ministry.
The objective of engaging the private school operators was to get all private schools to meet the basic guidelines set by the Ministry of Education, particularly as it relates to the curriculum used.

GINA said that new Education Legislation which is currently before the Attorney General’s Chambers comprehensively addresses issues governing the operation of private schools.
The legislation which embodies modern education reform requires all private schools to obtain a permit to operate.
