Haslington human torch woman dies

The 22-year-old woman who made a human torch of herself because of an apparent argument with her 52-year-old lover, died last Wednesday and was laid to rest yesterday at the Golden Grove Cemetery, East Coast Demerara.

Relatives informed Stabroek News that Shellon Philadelphia  died of medical complications, while undergoing treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, associated with her receiving third degree burns.

The incident occurred on December 28 last year at the woman’s home in Haslington, East Coast Demerara. Reports from Philadelphia’s niece, who was at home with her aunt at the time of the incident, was that after a lengthy row over the telephone, with the man, her aunt was heard saying that the man did not want the relationship anymore and as such she would kill herself.

It was after constant ranting by her aunt that she went to see what was happening and witnessed her self destructive act.

The niece summoned help from relatives who live nearby and the woman was taken to GPH where she was admitted to the Burns Unit.

The woman, who relatives described as of not too sound mind, “flighty”, was treated at the hospital for the severe burns to her body and remained a patient there until the time of her demise.
