Businessman Roger Hinds was last evening shot two times and robbed of an estimated $10 million, inclusive of gold and diamond jewellery.
The 46-year-old from 111 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro, was attacked by two men while sitting in his vehicle at D’Urban Street, Lodge around 6:30pm.
According to the man’s son Akeel Hinds, who is currently vacationing in Guyana, he and his father went to the location to visit some relatives.
Akeel told this newspaper that he had just stepped out of the vehicle to go inside when he heard what sounded like firecrackers.
“I took like five minutes in the place and I heard two shots and I thought it was firecrackers…I looked over and I saw two gunmen. They had on two white t-shirts and they were wearing short pants,” the son recalled.
“I couldn’t see them properly. Their caps were pulled down… They ran away and I think my dad saw them jump in a car,” Akeel indicated.
When asked what was taken, the son noted that the perpetrators made their escape with one gold chain, two diamond rings, one gold ring, two weapons and a bag containing more than $1 million.
He said that he found his father lying on his stomach with gunshot wounds to his right arm and left leg. Upon checking for the key to the vehicle, he found that they were missing and his father indicated to him that the men had fled with it. “I could have driven him here but they went with the keys,” Akeel said.
He stated that he then lifted his father and assisted him into a taxi which rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
There, friends had gathered as they awaited word from the nurses on Hinds’ condition. They were advised that an x-ray was taken and that the patient would be admitted to the male surgical ward. He was said to be in a stable condition.
