Police said that for the year of 2011 there was a 5% increase in fatal accidents, but the number of deaths was the same, while there was also a 57% increase in the number of children who lost their lives on the roadways.
In 2010, there were 115 deaths on the roadways and the same number for last year. Meanwhile there were 101 accidents in 2010 and this increased to 106 in 2011, marking a 5% increase.
Some 73 deaths were caused by speeding; drivers under the influence of alcohol caused 18 persons their lives; while inattentiveness and failing to conform to signs took 15 lives, according to the police.
They also added that the number of serious, minor and damage accidents decreased by 5, 9 and 16% respectively.
For the year of 2011, 61,215 cases have been made out against delinquent drivers, with 11,572 and 1,027 for speeding and driving under the influence respectively.
Accidents in some of the police divisions have increased immensely; the ‘D’ Division has had a 64% increase in accidents and a whopping 73% increase in deaths. ‘E&F’ Division recorded a 33% increase in accidents and a 43% increase in deaths due to accidents.
